In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital in Karachi successfully removed a metal lock from the stomach of a 23-year-old mentally challenged woman — without surgery.
The young woman, a resident of Khokhrapar, had swallowed the lock in a critical episode, prompting immediate medical attention.
X-ray reveals foreign object in stomach
Professor Anjum Rehman, a senior medical expert at the hospital, said the woman was brought in with severe abdominal pain and signs of distress. An X-ray confirmed the presence of a metal lock inside her stomach, raising fears of internal damage or obstruction.
Laparoscopy used to remove the lock safely
Rather than opting for invasive surgery, doctors decided to use laparoscopy — a minimally invasive procedure — to extract the lock. Professor Rehman confirmed that the operation was a success and the woman’s life is now out of danger.
“This was a high-risk case, given her mental health condition and the nature of the object. But thanks to the timely diagnosis and skilled team effort, we avoided full surgery,” he said.
Patient stable and under observation
The woman is currently stable and remains under observation to monitor for any complications. Medical staff at Lyari General Hospital praised the team’s efforts and called the procedure a “life-saving intervention.”
