Two young daughters of international kabaddi player Naveed Pehlwan lost their lives after allegedly consuming poisonous food in a heartbreaking incident in the Aimanabad area of Kamoke Tehsil, Gujranwala.
According to initial reports, Naveed Pehlwan had arranged a small celebration at home to mark the birthday of his eldest daughter. He ordered a cake from a private bakery and food from a local food point for the occasion. Soon after eating the food, the health of Naveed and his four children began to deteriorate rapidly.
All five family members were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where doctors confirmed the tragic deaths of seven-year-old Noor Fatima and four-year-old Jannat. The condition of Naveed and his three remaining children remains critical, with all of them still under medical care.
Doctors have cited food poisoning as the likely cause of the young girls’ deaths. However, a detailed medical report is still awaited.
Speaking to the media, Naveed said that soon after eating the food, his condition, along with that of his four children, deteriorated, prompting them to rush to the Civil Hospital Gujranwala.
On the administrative front, Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Director General Asim Javed took immediate notice of the incident and instructed food safety teams to investigate. According to a spokesperson for the PFA, officers have already met with the affected family and medical staff to gather preliminary details.
“Food safety teams will visit the bakery and the food point from where the items were purchased. Samples will be collected and sent to the laboratory for thorough analysis,” the spokesperson added.
Despite the severity of the incident, the family has yet to file a formal complaint with local police, possibly due to their current emotional and medical ordeal.
The food authority has assured the public that swift action will be taken once lab results confirm the source of the poisoning.
