Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released its 2025 World Press Freedom Index, declaring the global state of press freedom as facing a “difficult situation” for the first time.
The report highlights that press freedom has declined to its worst level yet, with economic pressures being a major contributing factor to the weakening of media worldwide.
According to the index, India ranks 151st among 170 countries. The report attributes this low ranking to an "undeclared media emergency" that has persisted since Narendra Modi came to power.
Pakistan stands at 158th position, reflecting growing concerns over media independence and journalist safety.
The report names Norway as the top-ranked country for press freedom, followed by Estonia and the Netherlands in second and third positions respectively.
