Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to formulate a national strategy to ban the manufacture and use of substandard syringes as part of efforts to prevent the spread of AIDS, Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases.
The directives were issued during a meeting chaired by the prime minister to review measures being taken to control infectious diseases across the country.
Prime Minister Sharif directed authorities to prevent the manufacture and use of substandard syringes, saying unsafe medical practices contribute to the spread of infectious diseases.
He also ordered legal action against individuals involved in the use of such syringes and hospitals found guilty of criminal negligence in disease prevention.
Special expert committee to be formed
The PM directed the formation of a special committee comprising experts to recommend measures for controlling infectious diseases. He said the committee must consult provincial governments while preparing its recommendations to ensure a coordinated national response.
The PM directed the Ministry of Law to work with relevant institutions and propose necessary amendments to the existing legal and regulatory framework.
He also instructed the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan to consult the medical device industry and submit policy recommendations.
National strategy termed essential
The prime minister said effective control of AIDS, Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases can only be achieved through a comprehensive national strategy and its effective implementation.
He added that local manufacturing of treatment equipment, world-class training of health sector personnel and cooperation with global partners are crucial for strengthening Pakistan’s response.
PM Shehbaz said support from international partners remains important in ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
