Serena Williams suffered a knee injury during her singles match at Wimbledon, putting her doubles participation with sister Venus Williams at risk.
American’s singles return ends in first-round defeat
The 44-year-old American returned to competitive singles action on Tuesday after almost four years away from the game but was beaten 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 by Australian Maya Joint in the first round.
Williams faces knee concern ahead of doubles return
Williams had tweaked her knee during the match, while her first doubles match with Venus Williams is scheduled for Friday. The Williams sisters last played together in a Grand Slam event in 2022.
Despite the defeat, Serena Williams said she was delighted with the support from fans on her return to Wimbledon.
