An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore has announced its verdict in the Mughalpura police vehicle arson case linked to the May 9 incidents.
Several senior political figures have been sentenced, while one key leader has been acquitted. The verdict was delivered by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul in a special court established inside Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore.
The court had reserved its decision on June 18 after lawyers completed their arguments in the case.
Sentences announced in arson case
The court sentenced multiple political leaders to 10 years in prison each in the Mughalpura police vehicle arson case, which is linked to the May 9 unrest.
Those sentenced include:
- Dr. Yasmin Rashid
- Ijaz Chaudhry
- Omar Sarfaraz Cheema
- Mian Mahmood Ur Rashid
All four were handed 10-year prison terms.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi acquitted
In the same case, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was acquitted by the court.
His acquittal comes alongside the sentencing of other senior political leaders involved in the case proceedings.
Prosecution and evidence details
According to court proceedings, the prosecution presented statements from 37 witnesses during the trial.
The case centered on allegations related to the arson of a police vehicle in Mughalpura during the unrest that followed the May 9 incidents.
The case had been under trial for an extended period, with arguments completed before the court reserved its verdict on June 18.
The final decision was announced in a special ATC setup inside Kot Lakhpat Jail due to security and procedural arrangements.
