Global music icon Shakira headlined a dazzling opening ceremony at the historic Estadio Azteca as Mexico officially launched celebrations for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The iconic stadium, known for hosting some of football’s greatest moments including Diego Maradona’s legendary “Goal of the Century” in 1986, was transformed into a vibrant cultural stage blending music, heritage, and sport.
Thousands of fans packed the venue on June 11, witnessing a star-studded celebration ahead of Mexico’s opening match against South Africa.
Shakira delivered a high-energy performance that electrified the crowd, setting the tone for the global football tournament.
She was joined by international artists including J Balvin, Burna Boy, Danny Ocean, and Fher Olvera, who helped turn the ceremony into a multicultural showcase of music and unity.
Global artists perform official anthem
The ceremony also featured a powerful lineup of global performers.
Opera legend Andrea Bocelli and K-pop star Ejae performed the official World Cup anthem titled “DNA”, drawing massive applause from the audience.
Meanwhile, Mexican singer Fernández performed the national anthem of Mexico, while South African artist Tyla represented her country with a stirring rendition of its national anthem.

The opening ceremony highlighted indigenous-inspired costumes, gold-themed choreography, and large-scale visual performances, reflecting the cultural diversity of the host nation.
Organizers described the event as a celebration of unity, heritage, and global football spirit as Mexico once again welcomed the world after four decades.
