Shakira, one of the world’s best-selling music artists, has revealed she once came very close to retiring from music.
The singer said she even imagined a completely different life away from fame, focused on farming and animals, before realizing she still had more to achieve in her career.
In a recent interview, Shakira shared that she once thought about stepping away from the music industry entirely.
The “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Waka Waka” hitmaker said she was ready to buy a farm and spend her time raising animals instead of continuing her global music career.
She admitted:
“A few years ago, I was ready to just buy a farm, raise animals, and retire from music.”
'I was crazy to think that,' says singer
Reflecting on that period, Shakira said she now views the idea as surprising and unrealistic, given her long-standing success in the industry.
She explained that she later realized she still had more to contribute creatively and professionally.
“But I look back, and I’m like, ‘How crazy is that?’ I had and have so much more to say and to do,” she said.
The singer added that people sometimes take their careers and identities for granted, which can lead to moments of doubt or hesitation.
Career renaissance
Despite once considering retirement, Shakira remains active at the top level of the music industry.
She recently performed the 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem “Dai Dai”, continuing her long association with the global football tournament.
This marks her latest collaboration with FIFA after previously contributing official music for the tournament in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
Shakira is also set to co-headline the FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show on Sunday, July 19.
Her continued presence at major international events highlights her lasting influence in global pop culture and sports entertainment.
