Actor Idris Elba has put an end to years of speculation suggesting he could become the next James Bond.
The British star clarified the rumours while promoting his upcoming film Masters of the Universe, which also stars Nicholas Galitzine.
Elba said the idea of him taking over the iconic 007 role was “never legit,” dismissing long-standing fan discussions about his potential casting.
The next James Bond film is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, but the studio has not yet announced who will replace Daniel Craig as the iconic spy.
Among the names frequently linked to the role are Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner, though no official decision has been confirmed.
Elba reflects on cultural expectations
In an interview with British GQ, Elba explained that he has always considered the rumours unrealistic.
He said James Bond has a specific character history and structure, and described the casting speculation as flattering but not practical.
Elba also suggested that global audience expectations play a role in franchise casting decisions.
Comments on audience reception
The actor said he believes that some international audiences may not accept a Black actor in the role of James Bond.
He noted that Bond is a global franchise and emphasized that cultural preferences differ across markets.
Elba stated that while the idea is discussed frequently, “that’s not what they like in their culture,” referring to varied global audience expectations.
Elba is currently focused on promoting Masters of the Universe, where he stars alongside Nicholas Galitzine.
The actor continues to be a major figure in Hollywood, balancing action roles with high-profile franchise projects.
