A new type of tea, known as GABA tea, is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide, with claims that it may help promote mental relaxation, improve sleep, and even reduce the effects of hangovers.
GABA tea is a special form of regular tea, made from green, black, or oolong tea leaves. What makes it unique is the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural neurotransmitter found in the human brain that plays an important role in calming the nervous system. Because of this, it is often associated with reducing stress, easing anxiety, and improving sleep quality.
The production process of GABA tea is different from conventional methods. It is prepared through a special anaerobic fermentation process, where tea leaves are processed in a nitrogen-rich, oxygen-free environment.
During this process, glutamic acid in the leaves is converted into GABA. This technique was first introduced in Japan in 1984. Interestingly, GABA tea contains significantly higher levels of this compound compared to regular tea, which is believed to enhance its potential benefits.
The tea’s growing popularity is largely due to its reported health benefits, including relaxation, improved sleep, reduced blood pressure, and better mood regulation. Some experts also suggest it may help ease hangover symptoms by relaxing the nervous system, although it is not considered a cure for any medical condition.
Scientific studies have shown some positive indications. One study found that students who consumed GABA-enriched oolong tea experienced immediate stress reduction, while another study observed improvements in blood pressure and mental calmness after 28 days of use. However, researchers emphasize that more comprehensive and long-term studies are still needed.
Several varieties of GABA tea are available, with Taiwanese GABA oolong being particularly popular, along with Japanese GABA green tea and GABA black tea, both appreciated for their distinct flavors.
In terms of consumption, GABA tea is generally considered safe for most people when taken in moderation. However, some individuals may experience mild drowsiness, lowered blood pressure, or slight stomach discomfort. People taking medication for blood pressure or neurological conditions are advised to exercise caution.
In summary, GABA tea has emerged as an interesting and potentially beneficial beverage, but experts say its claimed benefits should be further verified through more scientific research before being fully accepted.
