In a significant relief for citizens, the government has announced a sharp reduction in fuel prices across Pakistan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shared the decision during his address to the nation.
The revised prices will come into effect from April 11, 2026.
The prime minister announced a substantial reduction of Rs135 per litre in diesel prices.
Diesel will now be available at Rs385 per litre, down from previous levels. The move is expected to directly benefit the agricultural sector and public transport, both heavily reliant on diesel.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the decision comes at a crucial time as wheat harvesting begins across the country, where lower fuel costs can ease financial pressure on farmers.
Petrol price also reduced
Alongside diesel, the government also reduced petrol prices by Rs12 per litre.
Petrol will decrease from Rs378 to Rs366 per litre starting April 11. This reduction is expected to provide relief to daily commuters and middle-income households.
The prime minister also confirmed that the previously announced subsidy for low and middle-income groups—referred to as “white-collared” individuals—will continue.
Relief timed with agricultural season
Highlighting the importance of timing, Shehbaz Sharif noted that reducing fuel costs during the wheat harvesting season is critical.
He warned that failure to provide relief at this stage could result in increased production costs, ultimately leading to higher food prices for consumers.
The announcement comes as global oil prices have seen a relative decline in recent weeks.
The prime minister revealed that a proposal was under consideration to use part of the reduced oil prices to offset Rs129 billion spent earlier to control inflation. However, he rejected the idea.
Instead, he chose to pass on the maximum possible relief directly to the public, calling it a “moral responsibility” after citizens endured rising inflation.
