In the derby of the Pakistan Super League, Islamabad United, three-time champions, defeated new entrants Rawalpindiz in the 11th edition of the tournament at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Saturday.
The victory rested on a blistering innings by 19-year-old Sameer Minhas, who struck 70 from 36 balls to guide his side to the target with ease.
Rawalpindiz, after being put in to bat, posted 156 for seven in their allotted 20 overs. Kamran Ghulam led the scoring with a composed 50 off 39 balls, while Dian Forrester remained unbeaten on 44 from 19 deliveries, providing late impetus.
Islamabad United’s bowlers maintained discipline, with Faheem Ashraf and Salman Irshad taking two wickets apiece, while Richard Gleeson also claimed two scalps.
In reply, Islamabad United reached the target in 14.2 overs for the loss of three wickets. Sameer Minhas dominated the chase with an aggressive knock, supported by contributions from Mohammad Faiq and an unbeaten stand between Haider Ali and Mark Chapman.
Sameer Minhas was named Player of the Match for his decisive innings.
