After defeat against England in the Super Eight, New Zealand still have three points in Group 2, having earlier secured victory against Sri Lanka, while their fixture against Pakistan was washed out by rain.
Pakistan, by contrast, have yet to register a win in the group stage and suffered defeat to England owing to Harry Brook’s fine century. Many supporters continue to ask how Pakistan can still reach the semi-finals.
According to cricket website ESPNCricinfo, Pakistan will require a 64-run victory against Sri Lanka on Saturday, or, if batting second, will need to chase the target within 13.1 overs. A similar assessment was repeated by noted commentator Ian Smith at the close of the England-New Zealand match.
Should Pakistan fail to meet these conditions, even in the event of victory over Sri Lanka, New Zealand will progress to the semi-finals instead.
