WhatsApp is working on a new security feature that will allow users to protect their accounts with a password. The feature, called “Account Password,” is designed to provide an additional layer of security alongside existing options such as two-step verification.
Currently in development, the update is not yet available to all users. As with other beta features, it is expected to roll out first to selected testers before being widely introduced in future versions of the app.
With the Account Password feature, users will be able to create a password consisting of letters and numbers through the app’s settings. Early beta details indicate that passwords will need to be between 6 and 20 characters long and must include at least one letter and one number.
The new password will work in conjunction with WhatsApp’s existing six-digit verification code. During login or account verification, users will first enter the standard SMS verification code. If two-step verification is enabled, the corresponding code will also be required, after which the app will prompt users to enter the new account password for added security.
This move reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to strengthen account protection and provide users with more control over their digital security.
