A 21-year-old female student is fighting for her life after jumping from the second floor of a private university in Lahore, marking another deeply troubling incident at the same institution within days.
According to police and hospital officials, the student, a first-year D Pharmacy student, allegedly jumped from the second floor of the university building.
She was rushed to Lahore General Hospital, where she remains under treatment in the ICU in critical condition.
Severe injuries confirmed
Hospital sources said the student suffered severe brain swelling, while her lungs, jaw, spine and legs were badly affected in the fall.
Dr. Yahya Sultan said the injuries are serious, though later police officials stated there is no head injury, her legs are fractured, and she is currently out of danger but unconscious.
Police confirmed that the student called her family shortly before the incident.
Her sister said the family spoke to her the previous night and described the conversation as pleasant, adding that the family is still unaware of the reason behind her action.
A team from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency visited the university campus and collected evidence from the scene. Police have also secured CCTV footage as part of the investigation, while the student’s family has not yet formally filed a complaint.
University suspends classes
Following the incident, the university administration suspended all on-campus classes. Officials announced that classes will remain online until further instructions, citing safety and student welfare concerns.
Students of the university alleged that strict attendance requirements and high fees have contributed to mounting mental stress. They pointed out that another D Pharmacy student at the same university died by suicide a few days ago, raising concerns over student mental health.
Police say incidents should not be linked
Lahore DIG (Operations) Faisal Kamran said investigations are ongoing and stressed that the two incidents should not be linked.
He stated that the student may have had some family-related issues, assured privacy would be maintained, and said authorities would engage the university administration regarding student mental health and campus monitoring.
Police said guards and monitoring mechanisms at universities need to be strengthened to prevent such incidents. Authorities emphasized that the facts of this case will be determined after completion of the investigation.
