Kate Winslet is drawing on more than three decades of experience in front of the camera as she takes on her first major role behind it, directing the feature film Goodbye June.
The Oscar-winning actress says her long acting career - shaped by collaborations with some of cinema’s most acclaimed directors - has equipped her with the insight and confidence needed to helm her own project.
Reflecting on her journey, Winslet noted that years of observing filmmakers at work taught her not only the craft of storytelling but also the importance of collaboration and creating a supportive creative environment.
Having worked under directors such as James Cameron and Ang Lee, Winslet said she gained a deep understanding of both performance and the technical demands of filmmaking. She now applies those lessons as a director, focusing on clear communication with actors and fostering authenticity on set.
Goodbye June stars Winslet alongside Dame Helen Mirren and centers on a family grappling with emotional upheaval as their mother’s health deteriorates in the lead-up to Christmas.
In addition to directing and acting in the film, Winslet is also closely connected to the project through its screenplay, which was written by her son, Joe Anders.
Winslet has described her move into directing as a natural progression, driven by creative instincts developed over years of hands-on experience.
She believes her background as an actor gives her a unique perspective when shaping performances and setting the film’s tone.
The project marks a significant personal and professional milestone for Winslet, as she expands her role in the industry while continuing to build on the depth of knowledge earned throughout her celebrated acting career.
