The way has been cleared to postpone local government elections in Islamabad, as the federal government has decided to issue a Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance and has sent a summary to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval.
Sources divulged that the ordinance will be formally promulgated after the president’s signature. Under the proposed ordinance, the Punjab model will be adopted for local government elections.
Three town corporations will be established in Islamabad, corresponding to the three National Assembly constituencies. Each town corporation will have a mayor and two deputy mayors.
Certain powers of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will be transferred to local governments to make them more autonomous.
Formal approval for the ordinance had already been obtained from the federal cabinet.
