Hollywood legend Harrison Ford is set to receive the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, the main union representing film and television actors, in recognition of a career that spans over five decades and includes some of cinema’s most iconic characters.
Ford, celebrated for his work on both the big and small screens, will be honored at the rebranded Actor Awards in March, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The award is given annually to performers who exemplify the “finest ideals of the acting profession” and whose contributions have made a lasting impact on the industry.
The accolade highlights Ford’s extraordinary career, with characters like Indiana Jones and Han Solo becoming deeply ingrained in popular culture. Few actors have achieved the combination of critical acclaim, box-office success, and long-lasting relevance that Ford enjoys.
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin praised Ford’s influence, stating, “Harrison Ford is a singular presence in American life; his iconic characters have shaped world culture. His career has been endlessly exciting, always returning to his love of acting. We are honored to celebrate a legend whose impact on our craft is indelible.”
Ford’s path to stardom was gradual. Before achieving fame, he worked as a carpenter while seeking consistent acting roles. His breakthrough came with a supporting role as Bob Falfa in George Lucas’s 1973 film American Graffiti, which led to further collaborations with Lucas and set the stage for his major franchise roles.
In 1977, Ford gained international fame as Han Solo in Star Wars, followed by Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Both roles solidified his status as a leading man and became templates for adventure films.
Beyond blockbuster franchises, Ford has been acclaimed for nuanced performances, including his role as Rick Deckard in Ridley Scott’s 1982 science-fiction classic Blade Runner, which became a cult favorite. He reprised the role 35 years later in Blade Runner 2049, delivering a performance praised for its emotional depth and mature reflection.
Ford expressed gratitude for the honor, saying, “To be acknowledged by my fellow actors means a great deal to me. I’ve spent most of my life on film sets, working alongside incredible actors and crews, and I’ve always felt grateful to be part of this community.”
Recently, Ford has expanded his television work, starring alongside Helen Mirren in 1923, a prequel to Yellowstone, and showcasing a more vulnerable side in the comedy-drama Shrinking, demonstrating his continued versatility.
He joins a prestigious list of past SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award recipients, including Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Morgan Freeman, and Elizabeth Taylor. The award is particularly meaningful because it is given by fellow actors rather than critics or studios.
The 32nd Annual Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA will take place on March 1 and will be streamed live on Netflix, reflecting the growing role of streaming platforms in reaching global audiences.
