A photograph of a laughing and playful gorilla has won first place at the Comedy Wildlife Awards.
British photographer Mark Meth-Cohn spent four days in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda searching for gorillas, and his efforts finally paid off.
Methkon captured an image of a male gorilla eager to display its dancing skills. The photograph earned him first place in this year’s Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards and also won a prize in the mammals category.
Speaking about his photograph High Five, Meth-Cohn said a gorilla was particularly keen to show off its acrobatic abilities. Watching its performance was a pure joy, and he was pleased to have captured its playful nature on camera.
According to the organisers of the competition, a record number of entries were received this year, with more than 10,000 photographs submitted from 109 countries. The judges selected 40 images, from which the panel chose the overall winner and category winners.
