After nearly 15 years of planning, an 11-foot bronze statue of the science-fiction hero RoboCop has finally been installed in the United States.
The two-and-a-half-ton sculpture was placed outside the Free Age Production Studio in Detroit, Michigan.
Speaking to local media, studio owner Jim Tuscano said the statue was “incredible and deeply impressive,” adding that many people had already visited to see it.
The story of the statue began in 2011 when then-Detroit mayor Dave Bing responded to a tweet suggesting a RoboCop statue be erected in the city.
The mayor’s reply - now deleted - stated that there were no plans for such an installation. However, the exchange triggered a fan-led movement to make the idea a reality.
Brandon Walley, board president of Imagination Station, along with Lowland Technology co-founder and CEO Jerry Paffendorf, launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised $67,436 for the project.
The statue was completed in 2017, but its installation faced multiple delays, including the need for legal clearance from MGM, the company holding the character’s rights.
