Pakistan announced a comprehensive and strict crackdown on human trafficking after an international conference in Islamabad reached agreement on joint action against global criminal networks.
More than 30 countries, international bodies and experts attended the two-day conference on the eradication of migrant smuggling. The global forum expressed concern over the rising dangers of irregular migration. Participants declared enhanced cooperation under international conventions and protocols. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said the Greece boat tragedy exposed the severity of irregular migration.
Pakistan introduced amendments to its laws and formed a national action plan to curb human trafficking. Officials stressed that global cooperation is essential for the dismantling of networks involved in the crime. Delegates commended Pakistan’s role and efforts. The European Union announced full cooperation for the eradication of migrant smuggling. The EU’s second international conference will take place in Brussels in December.
