The third round of talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban in Istanbul has entered a decisive phase, with both sides struggling to bridge differences despite 18 hours of continuous discussions on the third day, according to official sources.
Sources said that Pakistan has maintained its firm stance that peace in the region is impossible without effective and verifiable action against the terrorists and terrorist networks operating from Afghan soil. Islamabad stressed that stability and mutual trust depend on concrete steps rather than verbal assurances.
Pakistan’s stance: Verifiable action essential for peace
During the lengthy sessions, Pakistani negotiators were said to have conveyed their message bluntly and unequivocally. They underscored that counterterrorism measures are not only necessary for Pakistan’s internal security but also for regional stability.
“Effective and verifiable action against terrorist elements is indispensable,” a source quoted Pakistani officials as saying. The hosts reportedly acknowledged that Pakistan’s demands were logical and legitimate, aligning with broader international concerns about cross-border militancy.
Kabul’s influence hindering progress
According to sources familiar with the talks, the Afghan Taliban delegation initially agreed with Pakistan’s position on several occasions and even acknowledged the central issue in the presence of mediators. However, each time progress seemed within reach, the Afghan representatives reversed their stance after receiving new instructions from Kabul.

Officials described the “illogical and unrealistic suggestions” coming from Kabul as the main reason for the deadlock. These last-minute changes, sources said, have prevented the talks from achieving a breakthrough despite serious efforts by all sides.
Last-ditch effort for breakthrough continues
Despite the stalemate, diplomatic sources confirmed that a final attempt is underway to make some fruitful progress before the round concludes. The host nations are reportedly working closely with both delegations to resolve the complex issues thoughtfully and constructively.
“The Istanbul talks are now moving toward their final stage,” said a source, adding that Pakistan remains committed to dialogue but will not compromise on issues related to terrorism and national security.
