Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has come under intense criticism for a recent social media post that many have condemned as deeply insensitive.
Varma controversially compared the ongoing conflict in Gaza to Diwali, one of India’s most celebrated festivals of light.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Varma wrote:
“In INDIA only one day is DIWALI and in GAZA, every day is DIWALI,” accompanied by a fire emoji.

The remark quickly drew anger online, with users accusing the director of mocking human suffering and trivializing the loss of life in Gaza.
Social media platforms were soon flooded with condemnation, with many users calling Varma’s words “inhumane” and “disgusting.” Critics argued that his statement equated a festival symbolizing light, peace, and hope with scenes of bombings and destruction, sparking outrage across communities.
Prominent political figures also joined the backlash. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi denounced Varma’s post, saying:
“Imagine comparing Diwali celebrations to Gaza’s crimes of war. What makes a person so hateful is something I’ll never fathom or ever hope to.”
Misrepresentation of Diwali’s message
Commentators noted that Varma’s analogy misrepresented the cultural and spiritual significance of Diwali, which is celebrated as a triumph of light over darkness.
Netizens argued that the post clashed with the festival’s true message of compassion and renewal, especially at a time when global attention remains fixed on the devastating conflict in Gaza.
