Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan was attacked from Afghan soil on India’s behalf, warning that Islamabad’s patience over repeated terrorist incidents has run out.
The premier made the remarks during an address to the federal cabinet in which he outlined Pakistan’s firm stance on regional security, terrorism, and the future of Pak-Afghan relations. During the meeting, the government reviewed national and international affairs, and ongoing administrative reforms.
The prime minister took the cabinet into confidence regarding his foreign visits, recent diplomatic engagements, and Pakistan’s achievements at the international level. Cabinet members were briefed on the current regional situation, including security developments in neighbouring countries.
Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan was “forced to respond” after persistent provocations, making it clear that the “ball is now in Afghanistan’s court.” He categorically stated that Pakistan would not accept a ceasefire merely as a delay tactic, emphasizing that the Afghan Taliban must take concrete steps to ensure a permanent ceasefire.
“Ceasefire cannot be used to pass time. The Afghan Taliban will have to act decisively if they are serious about peace,” the prime minister asserted.
Call for complete elimination of Fitna al-Khawarij
The PM stressed that the Fitna al-Khawarij must be completely eliminated. He said the government and armed forces are united in their determination to eradicate the group and restore long-term peace in the border regions.
“The actions of the Khawarij must be rooted out entirely,” Shehbaz Sharif declared. “If the interim Afghan administration is sincere, we can move forward toward peace and reconciliation.”
The premier confirmed that Qatar and other friendly countries are playing a facilitative role in mediating discussions between Pakistan and Afghanistan to de-escalate tensions and prevent further hostilities.
Attack came while Afghan FM was in India
Highlighting the timing of recent hostilities, Shehbaz Sharif revealed that Pakistan was attacked from Afghan territory while the Afghan foreign minister was visiting New Delhi, linking the incident to Indian influence in regional destabilization.
He accused India of sponsoring terrorist networks that use Afghan soil to target Pakistan, saying the security forces had foiled multiple such infiltration attempts in recent weeks.
Tribute to martyred soldiers and families
The prime minister shared a moving account of a conversation with the mother of a martyred soldier, who told him her son had sacrificed his life while fighting Fitna al-Khawarij.
“She said her son gave his life to protect Pakistan,” Shehbaz recalled emotionally. “Their sacrifices strengthen our resolve to rid the country of terrorism once and for all.”
He reiterated his unwavering support for the Pakistan Army and security agencies, acknowledging their continuous efforts and sacrifices to defend the nation from both internal and external threats.
Remarks on Gaza Conflict and Global Responsibility
PM Shehbaz also touched upon the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, recounting his discussions at the Sharm El-Sheikh conference where he appealed for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine.
“Thousands of children and innocent people have been martyred in Gaza,” he said. “In front of the world, children and girls are being killed—will you not remember Allah for help?”
Shehbaz Sharif added that he, along with world leaders and the field marshal, made extensive diplomatic efforts in Egypt to push for an end to the violence.
“Seventy-four thousand people have been martyred; the world has not witnessed such cruelty. I thank Allah that a ceasefire has finally been achieved, but lasting peace must follow,” he said, reiterating his call for the establishment of a Palestinian state with full rights.
IMF agreement and financial reforms
Turning to the economy, Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that Pakistan has reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF, paving the way for the release of the next loan installment soon.
However, he emphasized that Pakistan was not created to survive on loans, declaring that the current IMF program would be the last.
“This IMF loan will be our last. InshaAllah, we will put Pakistan back on its feet and free ourselves from the cycle of debt,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to economic independence through structural reforms and domestic growth initiatives.
Cabinet expresses full support for Pakistan Army
The meeting witnessed a strong show of solidarity with the Pakistani armed forces. The cabinet members paid glowing tributes to the martyred soldiers who laid down their lives in the fight against terrorism and expressed complete solidarity with their families.
Participants unanimously reaffirmed their resolve to uproot terrorism in all its forms, reiterating that the sacrifices of the security forces will not go in vain.
“The government stands firmly with the armed forces in their mission to eliminate terrorism and ensure lasting peace in the country,” the statement from the meeting read.
Detailed review of regional security and terror threats
The cabinet reviewed in detail the ongoing infiltration and terror threats emanating from Afghanistan, as well as India’s hostile activities and the actions of terrorist elements operating against Pakistan’s internal stability.
Ministers expressed deep concern over the cross-border challenges and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and maintaining peace through coordinated national efforts.
Focus on economic, trade, regulatory reforms
Apart from security matters, the meeting also covered significant economic and administrative issues. The cabinet ratified the decisions of the Cabinet Committee on Intergovernmental Trade Matters, underscoring the government’s resolve to promote transparent and efficient trade practices across the federation.
The cabinet further reviewed recommendations from the Cabinet Committee on Regulatory Reforms and considered proposals related to Overseas Employment and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), emphasizing skill development for the country’s youth.
Additionally, the decisions of three separate meetings of the Cabinet Committee on legislative cases were also ratified.
Power sector reforms
A detailed report from the Ministry of Energy was presented during the meeting, outlining ongoing and proposed reforms in the power sector. The prime minister emphasized the importance of efficiency, transparency, and sustainability in the energy supply chain to support long-term economic stability.
The cabinet appreciated the efforts of the Energy Ministry in implementing structural changes aimed at reducing circular debt, modernizing power distribution, and improving governance within the energy sector.
Commitment to stability and reform
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif concluded the meeting by highlighting the government’s commitment to peace, stability, and economic revival. He reiterated that Pakistan’s progress depends on strong institutions, consistent reforms, and unity in the face of internal and external challenges.
“We stand united in our determination to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty, strengthen the economy, and ensure peace through collective resolve,” the prime minister said.
