The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of potential flooding across various regions of Pakistan as heavy rains are expected from August 5 to 10. Authorities have been put on alert to ensure timely action and risk mitigation.
Heavy rain forecast triggers flood alerts
According to the NDMA spokesperson, the upper and central parts of the country are likely to receive significant rainfall during the forecast period. These monsoon rains may lead to medium- to high-level flooding in several rivers and streams, raising concerns about public safety and infrastructure.
Chenab, Jhelum, Kabul Rivers at risk
The NDMA highlighted that:

River Chenab could face medium to high flooding at Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad.

Jhelum River, especially in the upper Mangla region, may also see moderate to high water levels.

River Kabul at Nowshera is expected to swell, with similar risks in the streams of Swat and Panjkora.
Flood risk across barrages and northern rivers
Low-level flooding is likely at key barrage points, including:

Guddu
In Gilgit-Baltistan, increased flows are expected in the Hunza and Shigar rivers. There is a high probability of flooding in local streams such as Hispar, Khunjerab, Shimshal, Braldu, Hoshe, and Saltoro.
Balochistan also on high alert
Rivers in the districts of Musakhel, Sherani, Zhob, and Sibi in Balochistan are also likely to overflow due to the forecasted rains. The NDMA has urged local administrations to remain vigilant and ensure quick response mechanisms are in place.
Dams nearing capacity
The NDMA further stated that Tarbela Dam is currently 90% full, while Mangla Dam has reached 60% capacity, indicating reduced buffer capacity in case of intense rainfall.
NDMA issues timely alerts to agencies
All relevant departments and provincial disaster management authorities have been informed about the possible risks. The NDMA stressed the importance of proactive measures, coordination, and public awareness to minimize losses.
