Renowned Pakistani television host and actor Tauseeq Haider has criticised society’s treatment of unmarried men and women, calling out its apparent double standards.
Speaking on a recent podcast, Haider reflected on the societal attitudes that differ sharply depending on gender. He observed that when a man remains unmarried, it is often assumed to be his personal choice, whereas an unmarried woman is perceived as someone who simply could not find a partner.
“When we speak about an unmarried man, we say he did not marry. But when we refer to a woman in the same situation, we say her marriage did not happen,” Haider added.
He questioned why such assumptions persist, adding, “Perhaps the man also did not have the opportunity to marry. Has anyone ever asked me about my sorrow? What if I, too, never had the chance?”
Haider shared that although he once tried to find a partner, circumstances did not allow the relationship to progress to marriage. He later shifted his focus towards his career.
The veteran host also challenged the belief that marriage is a necessity to complete a love story, stating that it should not be pursued out of fear of ageing. Rather, he asserted, it should happen when one meets someone who makes life feel incomplete without them.
“Marriage should be with the person who makes you feel whole,” he added.
