Veteran Bollywood actor Paresh Rawal has stirred controversy with his recent remarks defending an earlier statement in which he claimed to have consumed his own urine for medicinal purposes nearly four decades ago.
The 69-year-old actor, known for his versatile roles in Indian cinema, had revealed in an interview earlier this year that he had followed a traditional urine therapy method after sustaining a severe knee injury.
The revelation sparked considerable backlash and ridicule on social media.
Now, in a recent interview, Rawal has responded to the criticism in a manner many have described as distasteful and unbecoming of his stature in the industry.
“I haven’t offered urine to anyone, have I?” he remarked, smiling. “Or do they have a problem because I didn’t offer them (my urine)? Are the critics thinking — ‘He drank it alone and didn’t give it to us’?”
He continued: “This is an experience of my personal life which I went through 40 years ago and I have now narrated it. Why is there so much fuss about it? People enjoy making a mountain of rye, let them enjoy it.”
Rawal’s statement has drawn further criticism online, with some commentators calling it “shameful” and “vulgar,” questioning the need for such language in response to public scrutiny.
Despite the backlash, Rawal maintained that several individuals approached him privately following his revelation, seeking more information about the unconventional treatment. However, he said he chose not to elaborate further on the subject.
The original anecdote, which has now resurfaced due to his recent comments, was shared during an interview with The Lallantop. In it, Rawal recalled suffering from a serious knee injury and being unable to walk. During that time, Veeru Devgan, a renowned action director and father of actor Ajay Devgn, paid him a visit and suggested a traditional remedy.
“He advised me to wake up in the morning and drink my first urine. He said this is what all fighters do,” Rawal had recounted. “It sounded strange, but I followed his advice. To my surprise, I started feeling much better in just 15 days. Even the doctors were shocked when I was able to return to work within a month.”
