An Air India flight arriving from Cochin to Mumbai veered off the runway on Sunday morning due to heavy rainfall. Flight AI 2744 landed at 9:40 am but skidded off Runway 27, prompting immediate suspension of operations on the affected runway for safety inspections.
Airport authorities temporarily closed Runway 27 to assess any damage and ensure safe operations. No injuries were reported, and passengers were safely evacuated.
This incident comes as Mumbai continues to witness intense monsoon showers, severely affecting visibility and runway conditions. Authorities have urged airlines to remain vigilant while operating under adverse weather.
The last major runway accident in India occurred in August 2020, when an Air India Express flight crash-landed in Kozhikode amid rain, resulting in 21 fatalities.
Additionally, the Ahmedabad airport witnessed a massive scare in November 2023 when a chartered plane carrying medical supplies crash-landed due to hydraulic failure. Although the aircraft sustained major damage, there were no casualties.
