Zimbabwe reinstated veteran all-rounder Sikandar Raza in a revamped 15-man squad to face England in a one-off four-day Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham from 22 May.
The 39-year-old, born in Pakistan, had missed the previous month’s Test against Ireland and two against Bangladesh, after receiving clearance to appear in various Twenty20 franchise tournaments.
Zimbabwe also promoted back-up wicketkeeper Clive Madande and pace bowler Newman Nyamhuri, introducing three changes to the side that had shared wins and losses during their Test series in Bangladesh.
The selection panel omitted Johnathan Campbell, Nyasha Mayavo and Vincent Masekesa as the nation prepared to meet England in a Test match for the first time since 2003.
Zimbabwe confirmed that Craig Ervine would lead the side as captain, while seasoned batter Sean Williams also retained his place in the line-up.
Coach Justin Sammons, born in South Africa, offered a firm outlook ahead of the contest. “In terms of performance, I expect us to play to a standard that can compete with one of the best teams in the world,” said Sammons. “I really want to see the guys walking out there believing that they belong, embracing and enjoying the moment.”
Following the England clash, Zimbabwe planned to play neighbours South Africa in Arundel from 3 June in another four-day fixture. South Africa scheduled the encounter as preparation for the World Test Championship final against Australia, the reigning title-holders, from 11 June at Lord’s.
