The heads of the American and British intelligence agencies have issued a rare joint statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
CIA Director William Burns and MI6 Chief Richard Moore emphasized that their agencies are working tirelessly through intelligence channels to advocate for restraint and de-escalation.
In an opinion piece for the Financial Times, the two leaders highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. They noted that such a ceasefire could alleviate the severe suffering and loss of Palestinian civilian lives and facilitate the release of hostages who have been held for nearly a year.
Burns has been actively involved in efforts to end the conflict, including recent high-level discussions in Egypt aimed at negotiating a temporary cessation of hostilities and a hostage agreement. Despite these efforts, an agreement has yet to be reached, though US officials believe a resolution is imminent.
US President Joe Biden has indicated that only a few issues remain, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described claims of a breakthrough as inaccurate.
The US and the UK, both strong allies of Israel, have shown differing approaches recently. The UK suspended some arms exports to Israel, citing concerns over potential violations of international law, while the US remains more closely aligned with Israel’s position.
Burns and Moore also addressed other global threats, including Russia’s “reckless campaign of sabotage” in Europe and the manipulation of technology to spread disinformation. They pointed out the challenge posed by Russia's efforts to influence American elections and the broader geopolitical landscape, which includes rising tensions with China and ongoing international terrorism.
