The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) opted on Sunday to reinstate the central contract of fast bowler Haris Rauf, which had been terminated just last month.
The decision was announced by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during a press conference held on Sunday, marking a reversal following an appeal lodged by the pace sensation.
Addressing the media, Chairman Naqvi disclosed that Rauf had submitted a letter expressing remorse over the preceding misunderstanding and acknowledging an erroneous decision.
"We have received a letter from Haris Rauf, wherein he has acknowledged the misunderstanding and admitted to making an incorrect decision. Following receipt of his written statement, we have opted to reinstate his central contract," stated Naqvi.
The chairman underscored Rauf's significance to the national team, affirming, "He is our star player, and it is imperative for us to ensure his well-being." Rauf is presently on the path to recovery from a shoulder injury sustained during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9.
Nevertheless, Naqvi asserted that there would be no leniency regarding No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players. "There will be no exemptions granted on NOCs. We are committed to upholding policies as per the contractual agreements. No player will be exempted, and we will not succumb to any form of lobbying," he affirmed.
For those unfamiliar with the backstory, Haris Rauf had faced penalties from the PCB last month following an investigation into his refusal to join Pakistan's Test squad for the 2023-24 tour of Australia. Despite being allowed to present his perspective before a PCB committee, Rauf's explanation fell short of satisfying the committee's concerns.
"After an exhaustive hearing conducted by a PCB committee, considering the viewpoints of all involved stakeholders, Haris' central contract was terminated effective from December 1, 2023. Additionally, no NOC to participate in any foreign league would be granted until June 30, 2024," a statement issued by the PCB had previously outlined.
The PCB management extended a fair opportunity for Rauf to present his case, adhering to principles of natural justice, but his response was deemed unsatisfactory.
Stressing the significance of representing Pakistan in cricket, the PCB expressed disappointment over Rauf's refusal to be part of the Test squad without presenting a valid medical report or justifiable reasons, deeming it a breach of his central contract.
