US President Donald Trump reaffirmed Washington's close ties with Türkiye during talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, praising Ankara as a key ally and indicating that a decision on the sale of F-35 fighter jets could be made soon.
Speaking alongside Erdoğan after their meeting in Ankara, Trump said the two leaders discussed trade, military cooperation, regional conflicts and NATO.
Trump described Türkiye as one of America's strongest partners, saying the two countries enjoy "a very good relationship" and share strong personal chemistry.
He praised Erdoğan's leadership, calling him a respected global leader and saying Türkiye has become militarily stronger under his leadership.
F-35 decision under consideration
Trump said Washington is considering the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Türkiye and noted that if the aircraft are supplied, the US would also provide the necessary spare parts and support.
Erdoğan said he hopes for a favourable outcome, adding that Türkiye had long expected delivery of the fighter jets.
Ukraine, Syria and Iran discussed
Trump expressed hope that the Russia-Ukraine war would end soon, saying he believes both sides want an agreement.
He also praised Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, saying he had united the country, and credited Erdoğan with helping diplomatic efforts related to Ukraine and Iran.
Erdoğan said Türkiye continues working to help bring the United States and Iran closer to dialogue while supporting regional peace efforts.
Trump comments on NATO and Europe
Trump said he attended the NATO summit because it was hosted by Türkiye and voiced disappointment with NATO, while reiterating that the United States has long protected Europe from Russian threats.
He also argued that Europe must address immigration and energy challenges to ensure its future.
Views on greenland and defence
Trump repeated his view that Greenland should be under US control rather than Danish administration.
He also said he had no objection to Türkiye's purchase of Russian defence systems, describing it as a sovereign national decision that strengthened the country's defence capabilities.
Earlier, Erdoğan welcomed Trump at the Presidential Palace in Ankara with an official ceremony that included a guard of honour, a gun salute and a Turkish Air Force flypast.
