Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iran's full oversight for the next 30 days, stressing that any unilateral intervention could further delay the reopening of the vital maritime route.
The remarks came during a joint press conference in Baghdad with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, where the two sides discussed regional security, bilateral ties and recent developments following the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.
Iran reaffirms control over Strait of Hormuz
Araghchi said he had briefed his Iraqi counterpart on the latest developments following what he described as the war imposed on Iran, as well as the memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington.
"The Strait of Hormuz remains under the total oversight and management of Iran through the 30 coming days, and after all obstacles are removed the total capacity of the waterway will be restored. This is what we are working on," he said.
He added that responsibility for the waterway rests solely with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
"There is no other party or state in this respect," Araghchi said, warning that any intervention or unilateral action would worsen the situation and delay the reopening of the strait.
Urges US to push Israel to stop its attacks on Lebanon
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says all aspects of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the United States must be honoured including the clauses on Lebanon.
“Regrettably, the Zionist entity continues its air strikes on Lebanon,” Araghchi said in Baghdad, adding the MoU was also accepted by Israel.
Washington “should live up to its responsibility and force” Israel to end its attacks on Lebanon to end the war, he said.
Araghchi also called on Washington to push Israel to withdraw from the areas it has been occupying in Lebanon. “This was the first clause of the MoU,” he noted.
Iran thanks Iraq for its support
During the press conference, Araghchi thanked Iraq for supporting Iran during the conflict.
"The people and government of Iraq have always extended their support during the war. They have always supported the Iranian people who were victims to the Israeli American aggression," he said.
He also praised the Iraqi people for standing with what he described as their Iranian brothers.
Speaking alongside Araghchi, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said the conflict in the region was continuing in a different form, with military skirmishes taking place around the Strait of Hormuz.
He said ending the war remained a priority and stressed that regional security should be ensured by countries in the region themselves.
Hussein also called for a meeting involving the Gulf states, Iraq and Iran, and reiterated the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the naval blockade.
According to a statement shared on Araghchi's Telegram channel, the visit focused on regional and bilateral issues.
The discussions also included coordination for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral ceremonies at Iraqi shrines.
