New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended an Ashura gathering and shared pictures from the event on social media.
In his message, Mamdani said Ashura is a day of remembrance, sacrifice and self-accountability, carrying a powerful lesson for people across faiths and communities.
Mamdani said the 10th day of Muharram reminds people of Hazrat Imam Hussain’s (AS) unwavering commitment to justice, truth and human dignity.

He said Imam Hussain’s (AS) timeless legacy reflects the enduring values of faith, service to one another, and the belief that justice is always worth fighting for.
Mayor calls for unity against injustice
Mamdani said New York’s strength comes from the many faith traditions that shape the city. He added that these shared values also strengthen the collective struggle against injustice and oppression.
The New York mayor prayed that people continue to carry forward the values of Ashura while building a more just city for every New Yorker.
He said the struggle for justice is always worthwhile and urged people to reflect on the message of sacrifice, service and truth.
