The Swiss foreign ministry has confirmed that a US–Iran agreement will be formally signed on Friday at the Burgenstock resort, a secluded mountainside location overlooking Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland.
According to a statement shared with AFP, the venue was selected due to its secure and isolated nature, making it suitable for high-level diplomatic proceedings involving sensitive negotiations.
The ministry said the location was proposed by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, alongside representatives from the United States and Iran.
High-level Iranian delegations expected
Iranian parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is expected to lead the Iranian delegation for the signing ceremony, according to regional media reports.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi was quoted as saying that the signing will take place in Switzerland, although the exact arrangements remain subject to final confirmation.
He added that subsequent negotiations are expected to begin immediately after the memorandum of understanding is signed.
US representation
Reports indicate that the US delegation is expected to be led by Vice President JD Vance, marking a high-level political presence at the signing ceremony.
Officials have described the process as the beginning of a broader negotiation phase aimed at establishing a longer-term agreement following the initial memorandum.
According to Iranian officials, recent discussions between the two countries have been facilitated through mediation efforts involving Pakistan and Qatar, which helped bridge gaps between the negotiating sides.
The talks reportedly focused on ending tensions and establishing a framework for continued dialogue following years of strained relations.
Officials said that while the signing of the memorandum represents a significant step forward, it is not the final agreement. Instead, it will initiate a new round of negotiations aimed at addressing outstanding issues.
Switzerland’s role as host reflects its longstanding position as a neutral venue for international diplomacy.
