The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert to the deputy commissioners of Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Upper and Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra over the risk of glacial lake outburst floods and sudden flooding.
The PDMA stated that intense heat and rainfall have accelerated the melting of glaciers and snow in the northern districts.
It said the increased water flow caused by rainfall has heightened the threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and flash floods.
According to the authority, there is a risk of glacial lake outbursts in the snow-covered valleys of Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, Dir and Mansehra.
The PDMA warned of possible landslides, falling mud and rock debris, and disruption to link roads in vulnerable areas.
It added that sudden surges in rivers and streams could trigger flooding in low-lying localities.
Local administrations have been directed to maintain continuous monitoring of sensitive locations.
The PDMA has instructed district authorities to issue timely warnings in high-risk areas and ensure the availability of essential supplies at safe locations during evacuation exercises.
Authorities have also been directed to provide advance warnings to residents of low-lying areas, keep community alert systems operational, and maintain close coordination with local disaster management committees.
The public has been advised to avoid riverbanks, rain-fed streams and fast-flowing waterways during the ongoing heatwave.
Tourists and travellers have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution in sensitive areas.
Rescue 1122, the Communication and Works Department, the National Highway Authority and other relevant agencies have been placed on alert to respond to any emergency situation.
The PDMA has directed all concerned departments to remain vigilant and ensure machinery and personnel are deployed in advance.
