Former Pakistan fast bowler became the first player to claim a five-wicket haul in T20 internationals during the 2009 World Twenty20.
Former Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul’s memorable performance against New Zealand in the ICC World Twenty20 has completed 17 years, with the Pakistan Cricket Board recalling his historic achievement.
Gul, regarded as one of the pioneers of fast bowling in T20 cricket, dominated the first two editions of the ICC Men’s World Twenty20 in 2007 and 2009 through his accurate yorkers and disciplined bowling.
On June 13, 2009, at Kennington Oval in London, Gul produced a remarkable spell of 5 wickets for 6 runs against New Zealand. His figures helped dismiss the Black Caps for 99 in 18.3 overs during a Super Eight match of the tournament.
New Zealand’s innings was led by Scott Styris, who scored 22 runs, while no other batter was able to build a substantial partnership against Pakistan’s bowling attack.
In reply, Pakistan reached the target of 100 for the loss of four wickets in 13.1 overs. Shahzaib Hasan scored 35 runs, while Shahid Afridi remained unbeaten on 29 to guide his side to victory.
Pakistan later secured the ICC World Twenty20 title by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
Remembering the occasion, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on social media that Umar Gul became the first bowler in T20 international history to take a five-wicket haul when he achieved the feat against New Zealand during the 2009 World Twenty20.
Gul was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution to Pakistan’s victory.
