Organizers overseeing funeral arrangements for Iran's late supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, have announced that farewell, funeral and burial ceremonies will be held after the first ten days of Muharram, urging the public to ignore speculation about the timing of the events.
The announcement came in a second statement issued on Tuesday by the headquarters responsible for commemorating the late leader and members of his family.
Funeral committee rejects speculation
The committee said extensive preparations are under way to ensure the dignified organization of farewell, funeral and burial ceremonies.
It warned against the circulation of rumors and unverified reports in domestic and foreign media regarding the timing and details of the events, saying such claims have created confusion among those hoping to attend the gathering.
According to the statement, reports suggesting immediate funeral dates are not valid.
The committee said the decision to delay the funeral until after the first ten days of Muharram reflects the late leader's longstanding commitment to commemorating the mourning ceremonies of Imam Hussein (AS).
As a result, the funeral and burial will take place after the conclusion of Ashura, which marks the 10th day of Muharram and is one of the most significant dates in the Islamic calendar.
The statement added that the move also respects the widespread observance of Muharram commemorations across Iran and the wider Muslim world.
Ashura expected later this month
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
According to reports, Ashura is expected to fall on June 25 or 26 this year, although the exact date depends on moon sighting.
The funeral committee did not announce a specific date for the burial but said final scheduling and logistical arrangements are being coordinated by relevant authorities and public organizations.
Preparations for large public gatherings
Iranian officials have previously indicated that large-scale public farewell and funeral ceremonies are being planned.
Reports suggest events are expected to be held in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, with authorities preparing for significant public participation.
The committee said further details regarding the ceremonies will be announced at a later stage once all arrangements have been finalized.
