Aamir Khan’s internationally acclaimed film Lagaan is set for a theatrical re-release on June 12, celebrating 25 years since its original debut.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the period sports drama first hit cinemas on June 15, 2001, and quickly became one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema history.
Story Set in Colonial India
Lagaan is set during British colonial rule in India and revolves around a group of villagers who challenge British officers to a high-stakes cricket match to avoid paying heavy taxes.
The film’s unique blend of sports, drama, and patriotism helped it gain global recognition.
Oscar recognition and major awards
The film earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 74th Academy Awards.
It also received widespread critical acclaim in India, winning eight awards at the National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
The re-release was officially announced by Aamir Khan Productions through its social media platforms.
The announcement described the film as a “timeless epic” and invited audiences to relive its magic in cinemas on June 12, 13, and 14 as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Star-studded cast
The film featured an ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, and international actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne.
Supporting roles were played by Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Rajendra Gupta, among others.
A.R. Rahman’s iconic music
The soundtrack of Lagaan, composed by A. R. Rahman, remains one of the film’s most enduring highlights.
Songs like Ghanan Ghanan, Mitwa, Radha Kaise Na Jale, and O Rey Chhori continue to be popular with audiences even decades after the film’s release.
With its return to theatres, Lagaan is expected to draw both nostalgic audiences and a new generation of viewers, reaffirming its status as one of Indian cinema’s landmark films.
