US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there has been “positive progress” in ongoing discussions with Iran, adding that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the developments.
Speaking at a news conference in New Delhi, Rubio said the talks are continuing and include technical discussions related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
'Iran cannot have nuclear weapons'
Rubio reiterated Washington’s long-standing position, stating that Iran “cannot have nuclear weapons under any circumstances.”
He said the United States remains committed to preventing Iran from advancing its nuclear ambitions, adding that President Trump is fully aware of the current situation.
Strait of Hormuz remains a key focus
The Secretary of State also addressed the strategic Strait of Hormuz, calling it a “free shipping route” and stressing that there should be no tolls or restrictions on passage.
Rubio said the US will not allow Iran to exert control over the waterway, which is one of the world’s most critical energy shipping corridors.
He added that “good news may be expected” regarding the Strait of Hormuz, though he did not provide further details.
Rubio confirmed that negotiations are also focused on technical aspects of Iran’s nuclear programme.
He said discussions remain ongoing and that multiple issues are still being worked through between the involved parties.
