US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that he remains in continuous contact with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts linked to Iran.
He said discussions are aimed at reaching an agreement with Iran amid rising regional tensions. Rubio made the remarks while speaking to journalists during a visit to Sweden.
Speaking to reporters, Rubio emphasized that reaching an agreement with Iran remains a top priority for the United States.
He also indicated that Pakistan is playing a mediating role in discussions between Washington and Tehran.
Focus on Iran agreement
Rubio said that efforts are underway to secure an agreement with Iran, describing it as a key diplomatic objective.
He added that the United States is actively engaged in negotiations and maintaining multiple strategic options, including what he referred to as a “Plan B.”
The US Secretary of State reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
He said ongoing efforts are focused on resolving major issues, including uranium enrichment and wider regional security concerns.
Strait of Hormuz
Rubio also referred to the importance of reopening and securing maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, making its stability a key global concern.
He linked discussions around the Strait to broader efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and ensuring free navigation.
Rubio added that the United States is also using the United Nations platform to support its diplomatic objectives and prevent escalation in the region.
He said coordination through international institutions remains part of Washington’s broader strategy.
