The reports surfaced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is once again emerging as an obstacle to peace, following a tense telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.
According to a US newspaper, Pakistan and Qatar have been involved in mediating a new draft agreement, with President Trump also confirming that intermediary countries are working on a letter of intent.
President Trump has stressed that any negotiations will include the nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz, with a 30-day negotiation period to begin after the signing of the draft.
The reports add that the Israeli Prime Minister has expressed opposition to talks with Iran and has signalled a preference for renewed strikes, while President Trump continues to press for the possibility of an agreement.
It is reported that Benjamin Netanyahu may visit Washington in the coming weeks for direct talks with President Trump.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed it is reviewing the new draft, though no major flexibility has been indicated so far. Tehran has called for the restoration of Iranian funds by the United States and a ceasefire in Lebanon with Israel as conditions for progress in talks.
