John Cena has revisited his retirement decision six months after stepping away from professional wrestling.
The 49-year-old WWE icon says his choice was driven more by data than emotion.
His final match took place in December 2025 against GUNTHER at a major WWE event.
John Cena officially retired from professional wrestling in December 2025 after a decorated career spanning decades.
His final in-ring appearance came against GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event, marking the end of an era for one of wrestling’s most recognized figures.
The 17-time world champion later reflected on his decision in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
Cena explained that while passion and instinct played a role throughout his career, his retirement decision was guided heavily by performance data.
He said:
“As much as I love feel and I love passion, I also love data.”
As a strength athlete, Cena said he regularly tracked key physical metrics, including:
- One-rep max strength
- Vertical jump performance
- Combine-style athletic testing data
These measurements, he noted, became central in evaluating his long-term performance.
How performance metrics influenced his exit
Cena shared that as he aged, he began noticing consistent declines in his performance numbers.
Despite maintaining disciplined habits — including structured training, proper rest, controlled diet, hydration, and monitored caffeine intake — the data still showed a downward trend.
He explained that when the numbers started dropping, it became a clear signal:
“All the data lines up. You should be strong.”
For Cena, the combination of age and measurable performance decline ultimately led him to conclude it was time to step away from wrestling.
Following his retirement, the wrestling icon was also diagnosed with Demodex Blepharitis, a condition affecting the eyes.
While no further details were shared in the report, the update comes months after his final WWE appearance.
