Pakistan is facing contrasting weather conditions this week, with a severe heatwave expected in parts of Sindh, southern Punjab and eastern Balochistan, while rain, wind and hail are likely in Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to the NDMA, rising temperatures may create health risks and also increase the chances of glacier melting and landslides in northern areas.
An NDMA spokesperson said there is a risk of heatwave in Sindh, southern Punjab and eastern Balochistan from May 19.
The spokesperson warned that these areas may experience a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to exceed 42°C between May 19 and May 26.
Citizens advised to avoid intense heat
The NDMA said the rise in temperature can cause health problems. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during intense sunlight and heat.
The spokesperson also urged people to drink more water and protect the body from water and salt deficiency.
Due to rising temperatures, there is a fear of glacier melting in the northern regions. Authorities also warned that the increase in heat may raise the risk of landslides in northern areas.
Rain expected in upper parts
According to the Meteorological Department, rain and hail are likely in Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until May 23. Rain and hail are also expected in Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during this period.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority Punjab issued an alert regarding wind and rain across the province. A spokesperson said rain is likely in most districts of Punjab from tonight until May 23.
Punjab districts likely to receive rain
Rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Layyah, Faisalabad, Jhang, Okara, Gujranwala and Hafizabad. Rain is also predicted in Sargodha, Mianwali, Sheikhupura, Khushab and Mandi Bahauddin.
According to PDMA, Lahore, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Jhang and surrounding areas may also receive rain.
PDMA DG Umar Javed said an alert has been issued to commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab. He advised citizens to stay in safe places to avoid lightning and warned people not to stand in open areas during thunderstorms.
Farmers, tourists urged to take precautions
Javed said farmers should take advance measures while keeping weather conditions in mind. He also advised tourists to take precautionary measures while traveling to northern areas.
