State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad has said there is a possibility of delay in the introduction of new-design currency notes in the country.
He said the designs for the new currency notes had been sent to the government for approval. However, the government returned them to the central bank with instructions for certain changes and further improvement in the designs.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is now working on the revised designs, while the final approval for the new currency notes will be granted by the federal cabinet.
Earlier, while addressing traders at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the State Bank governor said there was a marked difference between the country’s economic conditions three years ago and those prevailing today.
He said that despite economic recovery, several challenges still remained, including economic pressures arising from the conflict in the Middle East.
Jameel Ahmad said there had been improvement in the opening of letters of credit in 2026 compared with 2023. Pakistan’s average monthly imports currently exceeded five billion dollars, whereas three years ago average monthly imports stood at around three billion dollars.
