President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have underscored the importance of press freedom and responsible journalism on World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2026).
Both leaders highlighted the growing threat of disinformation and the vital role of media in protecting democratic values.
Zardari stresses truth
President Asif Ali Zardari said peace cannot be achieved without truth, stressing that journalism plays a key role in ensuring transparency and accountability. He noted that free journalism is indispensable for an informed and functional democratic society.
The President expressed concern that disinformation is increasingly distorting democratic dialogue worldwide. He said journalists are facing harassment and pressure in many countries, raising serious concerns about media freedom.
He also highlighted the irresponsible use of social media platforms, calling it a worrying trend that contributes to misinformation.
Zardari said organized false campaigns are being run against Pakistan. However, he added that national unity has successfully thwarted such attempts. According to him, the media has played a responsible role by responding to misinformation with facts.
PM Sharif highlights responsible journalism
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to journalists, columnists, reporters, editors, and media workers in Pakistan and across the world for their services. He described journalism as a profession that also carries social responsibility.
In his message, the prime minister said timely, accurate, and unbiased reporting is the foundation of an informed society. He stressed that journalists are not only professionals but also custodians of social values.
He added that responsible journalism helps promote peace, stability, and better public understanding in society.
PM Sharif said journalists deserve a safe and dignified working environment to perform their duties effectively. He emphasized that press freedom must be protected to ensure media can function without fear or pressure.
The premier said Pakistan remains committed to dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts. He highlighted that the media plays an important role in promoting national unity and countering misinformation.
He also praised journalists who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties and acknowledged their contribution to strengthening democracy.
