President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have extended their congratulations to the newly elected office-bearers of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), adding that the government will continue to provide all possible support for the promotion of press freedom.
According to details surfaced on Saturday, President Zardari, in his message, said that adherence to journalistic values, fact-based reporting and the promotion of national interest are essential in the present time. He said that the constructive role of the media remains indispensable for national unity and democratic stability.
PM Shehbaz also conveyed his felicitations to the newly elected office-bearers of the Council. In his message, he said that a free, responsible and well-informed media is a fundamental pillar of a democratic society.
He expressed the hope that the new leadership will play an effective role in promoting journalistic values and safeguarding national interest. The premier added that the government will continue to extend all possible cooperation for the promotion of press freedom and for addressing the concerns of the journalistic community.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also congratulated the newly-elected president Kazim Khan and other office-bearers of the Council, and conveyed her good wishes.
She said she hopes the CPNE will play a full role in upholding free and responsible journalistic values, adding that effective contributions are expected from its leadership in safeguarding national interest.
