YouTube has started rolling out one of its most requested features globally for free users.
The picture-in-picture (PiP) mode now allows viewers to watch videos in a floating window while using other apps. The update brings major convenience, though some restrictions still apply.
YouTube is now enabling PiP mode for free users worldwide on both Android and iOS devices.
This means users can continue watching videos in a small floating window while switching between apps—without needing a Premium subscription.
What the feature allows
With PiP, users can exit the YouTube app and keep videos playing on screen while texting, browsing, or using other apps.
The feature works by swiping up or using the home button, which shrinks the video into a mini player.
The rollout comes with an important restriction.
PiP will not work for music-related content, including official music videos, Art Tracks, kids’ songs, or user-uploaded music. These remain exclusive to Premium users.
YouTube first introduced PiP to YouTube Premium users several years ago.
While US-based free users already had limited access, the feature is now being expanded globally and will gradually reach all users in the coming months.
User reactions mixed
The update has received mixed reactions online.
Some users welcomed it as a useful multitasking tool, while others argued that PiP is already a basic system feature on smartphones.
A section of users also criticized YouTube, saying the restriction felt unnecessary since the feature is technically built into both Android and iOS systems.
