Pakistan formally raises matter
Pakistan had formally taken up the issue with Somali authorities after reports emerged regarding the kidnapping of 11 Pakistani citizens.
According to sources, the Somali government gave a positive response to Pakistan’s request and assured full cooperation.
Sources said incidents of piracy have taken place in Somali coastal areas in the past as well. The latest case has once again raised concerns about the safety of foreign nationals and maritime-linked movement in the region.
Authorities are expected to remain in close contact as efforts continue for the recovery of the Pakistani citizens.
Families seek govt help
Families of the Pakistanis kidnapped by Somali pirates held a press conference at the Karachi Press Club and appealed to Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for help.
Ambreen Yousuf said the families have been suffering from severe mental anguish and distress for the past 10 days. Despite repeated contacts at the government level, no concrete response or progress has been made so far, the families said.
Yousuf urged the authorities to form a committee on a priority basis to secure the release of the hostages. The families also demanded that the federal government appoint a focal person to remain in contact with the affected families.
“We want the safety of our loved ones and cooperation from the government,” the families said.
The kidnapped crew members include Kashif, Hussain Yousuf, Mahmood, Usman Ghani, Aqeel Khan, Yasin, Imran, Rafiullah, Yasir and Amin.
“We are shattered, but we have not lost hope,” the families said. They said they only want the safe return of their loved ones and accountability from the government.
Mehwish Yasir said no ransom demand has been made by the kidnappers so far. She appealed to Field Marshal Asim Munir and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to help secure the release of their loved ones.
