Militants carried out attacks on military installations in the Malian cities of Kati, Bamako, Gao and Kidal. Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, was reported to have been killed in the incidents.
According to Arab media, the residence of Sadio Camara in Kati, near the capital Bamako, came under attack a day earlier, after which reports of his death emerged.
General Camara was regarded as one of the key figures in Mali’s military administration, which assumed power following coups in 2020 and 2021. He was seen as an influential figure within the current military leadership and a possible future leader. His death is being described as a significant setback for the armed forces.
The attackers did not confine their operations to Kati, with incidents also reported in Bamako, Gao, Kidal, Sevare and other towns.
Reports said that gunfire and explosions were still being heard in some areas, suggesting that the operations had not fully subsided.
